Alltel PRL List - Downloads

EDIT 6-8-09: The function of this page is thrown into further confusion, due to the integration of most of Alltel into Verizon, which complicates things much more than they were. As such, I will be posting what I can for the immediate future, but the reason I originally posted this page (to be able to roam on Sprint EvDO) is now kind of a non-issue. Since the release of the 30041 PRL, all EvDO capable phones should now be pushed a proper PRL by Alltel, effectively negating the need to manually load a PRL (unless you depend on Sprint's EvDO, in which case you will still need a 4xxxx PRL... though I wouldn't count on that being available for much longer).

EDIT 9-17-09: It looks like one good thing has come of the Verizon assimilation... it would appear that the HTC Touch Pro is now being pushed the 4xxxx PRL. About time. Thoughh, with the way Sprint SIDs are being removed from the new PRLs, there really isn't a whole lot of difference between a 3xxxx and 4xxxx PRL any more.

EDIT 7-9-10: Wow, it sounds like a lot of people are still using this site. I've finally obtained the correct version of QPST to work with my HTC Incredible and can start extracting PRLs once again.

If you are looking for a PRL for an Alltel phone because you *228'ed and got stuck with a "non-EvDO roaming PRL", or for any other reason, you've come to the right place.

If you are looking for a more comprehensive list, or for a PRL for a different provider, please visit A42887's Corolada PRL page. My page is not meant to replace it... it was basically for my own use, but I figured I might as well make it available to the rest of the world.

Why would I want to update my PRL, anyway?

And, a couple of terms you will need to understand:

  • Divested: This refers to Alltel areas/regions/SIDs/etc that will not become part of the Verizon network as part of the merger, due to antitrust regulations. These areas are in the process of being sold off to either AT&T or ATN.
  • Non-divested: This refers to Alltel areas/regions/SIDs/etc that have or will become part of the Verizon network as part of the merger.
  • EvDO capable phone: This refers to phones which are capable of accessing the EvDO high speed data network, as opposed to "1X only" phones. Most phones sold by Alltel in the past few years fall into this category. (The correct PRLs for 1X only phones are not archived here, simply because I have never owned one).
  • Special device/market PRLs: Often erroneously referred to as "smartphone PRLs", this refers to PRLs for data cards, and a select group of Alltel phones which were intended to be able to roam on EvDO networks other than Alltel's. This group includes all Blackberries, Palm Treos, and the Samsung Delve, but does NOT include other "smartphones" such as the HTC 6800/6900/Touch Pro/Touch Diamond, or the Motorola Q... though these PRLs work just fine on them. I make this clarification because the "official" PRL for the HTC/Motorola phones is the 3xxxx series, NOT the 4xxxx series. Don't ask me why, ask Alltel. EDIT 10/30/09: Well, that's not quite true any more, as my HTC Touch Pro has been getting the 4xxxx series pushed to it for the past month or two. However, my wife's PPC-6800 is still getting the 3xxxx series pushed.

Keep in mind that I am not affiliated with Alltel in any way, and these are not official Alltel releases... they are copies of the Alltel PRLs pulled off my HTC Touch Pro, PPC-6800, or PPC-6700 via QPST, or provided by others. Use at your own risk...

Important note: With 30041, all EVDO capable devices will now have the ability to use EVDO when roaming on a Verizon network. This is a step toward "normalcy" for the 3xxxx series... previously this capability was only available with a 4xxxx PRL. What this means is that from this point forward, you should not have to manually load a 4xxxx PRL on a device that gets pushed a 3xxxx PRL by Alltel.

To update the PRL on your Alltel HTC Touch Pro, PPC-6800, PPC-6700, and Hero, as well as Verizon-branded HTC Incredible and HTC Droid Eris (other providers should be similar, though you may need to contact them for the unlock code or ## number):

  1. Copy the PRL to your device (I keep them in my ActiveSync My Documents folder, or you could put it on your miniSD card)
  2. Dial ##775 (##PRL)
  3. Enter the unlock code (provider-specific... Alltel's is 000000)
  4. Tap on "Update PRL" (at top) and then "Edit" (bottom left).
  5. A file browse dialog will come up. Browse to the PRL file you placed on the phone, tap "OK" and then "OK" again. The device will soft reset and you will have the new PRL in place.

Why would I want to update my PRL, anyway?
Well, it depends. The PRL is just a file that your phone uses to decide which network you will roam on when you are out of your home area (it stands for "Preferred Roaming List). If you are not roaming (you are in your home SID) it does nothing. It's not a program, or a hack, or anything else.

Here is what an updated PRL WILL do for you:

  • In the case of 30036 and 30037, as well as the entire 4xxxx series, you will gain the ability to roam on Verizon's or Sprint's EvDO network (with a compatible device, of course)
  • Reduces your chances of roaming charges as new "free roam" areas are added
  • Could possibly improve battery life, though it's not likely
... and here is what it WON'T do for you:
  • Make your phone more reliable
  • Make your phone run faster or more efficiently
  • Make your phone capable of anything it's not capable of now
  • Get you free Internet access
  • Do your homework
  • Make Julienne fries in seconds
